The short version: Bourbski collects only what's needed to run the app. We don't sell your data. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from within the app.
1. Who We Are
Bourbski ("we," "us," or "our") is a mobile application for whiskey enthusiasts to track their collection, log tasting notes, and share activity with friends. The app is available on Android via Google Play.
For questions about this policy, contact us at privacy@bourbski.com.
2. Information We Collect
We collect information you provide directly when you use the app:
- Account information: email address, display name, username, and optional bio and profile photo (avatar).
- Shelf data: bottles you add to your personal inventory, including bottle name, brand, distillery, spirit type, status (sealed/open/empty), quantity, price paid, fill percentage, personal rating, and rebuy preference.
- Tasting log: pour entries including the bottle, date, freeform tasting notes, and a multi-factor score.
- Wishlist: bottles you save to your want list.
- Social connections: friend connections you send, accept, or decline, and any users you block.
- Bottle submissions: bottle data you contribute to the community catalog, including name, brand, distillery, proof, age statement, label photos, and barrel pick details for store picks.
- Location: if you choose to tag where you purchased a bottle or poured a drink, we collect the specific coordinates and/or place name you select — either via your device's GPS or by searching for a store or venue. This is optional and only collected when you use these features.
- Contacts (optional): if you use the "Find from Contacts" feature, we read your device contacts' email addresses, hash them on your device, and check the hashes against our users to find people you already know who are on Bourbski. Your contacts themselves are never uploaded or stored on our servers — only the one-way hashes are sent, and only to check for a match.
- App diagnostics and usage: crash reports, performance diagnostics, and in-app activity (e.g. screens viewed, features used) to help us fix bugs and understand how the app is used.
We do not collect payment information. We only ever access your camera roll or contacts when you explicitly choose to use a feature that requires it (uploading a photo, or finding friends from contacts).
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information collected to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve the Bourbski app and its features.
- Enable the social features of the app — sharing activity with accepted connections, viewing friends' shelves and wishlists.
- Send account-related emails (email verification, password reset) through our email provider.
- Respond to support requests or inquiries sent to our contact email.
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to operating the app.
4. Information We Share
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share data only with the third-party service providers necessary to operate the app:
-
Supabase (Supabase Inc.) — our backend database, authentication, and file storage provider. Your account data, shelf entries, pours, wishlist, and uploaded photos are stored on Supabase's infrastructure. Supabase stores data in the United States. See Supabase's Privacy Policy.
-
Resend — our transactional email provider. Your email address is shared with Resend solely to deliver account emails (email confirmation, password reset). See Resend's Privacy Policy.
-
PostHog — our product analytics provider. We use PostHog to understand app usage and improve features; this includes in-app activity and session replay (typed text is never included). See PostHog's Privacy Policy.
-
Sentry — our error-monitoring provider. When the app crashes or encounters an error, diagnostic information is sent to Sentry to help us fix the issue. See Sentry's Privacy Policy.
-
Google Places API — when you search for a store or venue to tag a purchase or pour location, your search query is sent to Google to look up matching places. See Google's Privacy Policy.
-
Anthropic — when you use the label-scan feature, a photo of the bottle label is sent to Anthropic's Claude API to extract the bottle's name, proof, and other details. See Anthropic's Privacy Policy.
We do not use any of the above for advertising or ad measurement, and none of them receive your name, email, or other account information except where noted (Resend receives your email address solely to send you account emails).
We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to a valid legal request.
5. Data Visibility Within the App
Bourbski is private by default. Your shelf, pours, wishlist, and activity are only visible to users you have an accepted mutual connection with, unless you choose to make your profile public in your account settings.
Your wishlist can be shared as a public link to anyone (including people without a Bourbski account) using the share feature within the app — this is opt-in and intended for the gift list use case.
Bottle submissions you contribute to the community catalog are publicly visible to all Bourbski users, attributed as "submitted by a community member" (your identity is not displayed on the bottle listing).
6. Your Rights and Choices
- Access: Your data is visible to you within the app at all times.
- Correction: You can update your profile, shelf entries, and pour logs from within the app.
- Deletion: You can permanently delete your account and all associated data from the app's settings. Deletion removes your profile, shelf, pours, wishlist, and connections. Bottles you submitted to the community catalog are retained (with your authorship removed) to preserve the catalog for other users.
- Data requests: To request a copy of your data or for any privacy-related inquiry, email privacy@bourbski.com.
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or United Kingdom, you may have additional rights under GDPR or UK GDPR, including the right to object to processing and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
7. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your personal data is deleted from our systems. Anonymized bottle catalog contributions (with authorship removed) are retained indefinitely as part of the community database.
8. Children's Privacy
Bourbski is intended for users 21 years of age and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 21. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us at privacy@bourbski.com.
9. Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including encrypted data transmission (HTTPS) and using Supabase's built-in security and access control features. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure — we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
